The Difference Between Conventional and Holistic Medicine

If you’ve ever been told something in your body is “off,” you were probably given a name for it.
Thyroid issue. Hormone imbalance. Acne. Digestive problems.
And usually, there’s a plan that follows:Monitor it. Maybe medicate it in order to mask it.
But what rarely gets asked is the question that actually matters:
Why did this start in the first place?
Conventional vs. Holistic Medicine: What’s the Difference?
When it comes to your health, conventional medicine and holistic medicine are not the same—and they’re not trying to do the same thing.
Conventional medicine is very good at:
Diagnosing disease
Managing (Masking) symptoms
Handling acute or urgent situations
And there is absolutely a time and place for that.
But it’s not designed to step back and ask:
What systems led to this imbalance?
That’s where a holistic approach is different.
Instead of looking at one part of the body, holistic medicine looks at how everything is connected—and where things may have started to break down.
Why the Liver Plays a Central Role in Hormones, Digestion, and Energy

And one of the most common places I see things start to break down… is the liver.
This is something I see consistently in practice.
Not because everything is a “liver problem”…but because the liver is involved in so many of the processes people are struggling with.
It’s responsible for:
Processing hormones
Producing bile for digestion
Converting hormones and nutrients into usable forms
Supporting blood sugar balance and metabolism
Clearing what the body no longer needs
When it’s working well, you don’t notice it.
When it’s not… things start showing up in ways that don’t immediately point back to the liver.
Common Symptoms That May Be Linked to Liver Function

This is where it starts to click for people.
Because the symptom they’re dealing with often doesn’t match the root issue.
Thyroid Symptoms (Even with “Normal” Labs)
You may be told your thyroid is underactive.
But the thyroid produces mostly T4—an inactive hormone.
Your body has to convert that into T3, the active form.
A large portion of that conversion happens in the liver.
So if that process isn’t happening well, you can have normal labs…and still feel:
Exhausted
Cold
Foggy
Hormone Imbalance
You may be told you have estrogen dominance, PMS, or that your symptoms are “just menopause.”
But the liver is responsible for processing and clearing hormones.
If that process is sluggish, hormones can recirculate instead of being eliminated.
That can look like:
Hot flashes
Night sweats
Mood swings or irritability
Sleep disruptions
Breast tenderness
Hormonal acne
Acne
It’s easy to think of acne as a skin issue.
But your skin is one of your body’s elimination pathways.
If the liver and lymphatic system are congested, the body will often try to push that burden out through the skin.
That’s when you see:
Deep, stubborn breakouts
Cyclical flares
Skin that doesn’t respond to topical products
Digestive Issues
Bloating. Nausea. Feeling heavy after meals.
A lot of people assume it’s just “a gut issue.
But the liver produces bile, which is essential for breaking down fats and keeping digestion moving.
If bile flow is sluggish, digestion slows down too.
That can look like:
Bloating after eating
Discomfort with heavier meals
Constipation or incomplete bowel movements
Fatigue and Low Energy
You’re tired—even when you’re doing “everything right.”
The liver plays a central role in metabolism, blood sugar balance, and overall energy production.
If it’s constantly trying to process more than it can keep up with, energy often takes the hit.
Why Symptoms Don’t Always Point to the Root Cause
This is where the difference between conventional and holistic medicine becomes clear.
The liver is often part of the picture—and it’s frequently overlooked.
Conventional care tends to focus on the diagnosis.
Holistic care looks at the systems underneath it.
Why Symptoms Often Flare in the Spring

This time of year, I see this pattern even more.
Spring is a season of movement and transition.
After a slower, heavier winter, the body naturally begins to shift.
And if the liver and lymphatic system are a little backed up… you feel it.
That’s when people start noticing:
Breakouts
Digestive changes
Low energy
Feeling “off” for no clear reason
Not because something new is wrong—but because the body is trying to move things out, and it’s hitting resistance.
Why Aggressive “Liver Detoxes” Often Backfire

This is where a lot of people go wrong.
They jump straight into:
Juice cleanses
Raw diets
Aggressive detox protocols
And this is often where things get worse—not better.
Because when you push the body too hard—especially when it’s already struggling—you increase demand on the liver without improving its ability to function.
That can lead to:
Increased fatigue
Digestive disruption
Skin flare-ups
Hormonal symptoms worsening
These approaches don’t fix the root issue.
They override it.
What Supporting the Liver Actually Looks Like
A holistic approach doesn’t force the body—it supports it.
That looks like:
Warm, cooked foods instead of going all-in on raw
Simple bitter herbs to support digestion and bile flow
Proper hydration with minerals (not just plain water)
Gradual, sustainable changes instead of extremes
When you support the liver this way, you’re not forcing detox.
You’re helping the body do what it’s already trying to do—more efficiently.
The Bigger Picture: Why This Matters
This is the difference between conventional and holistic medicine.
One focuses on identifying and managing symptoms.
The other asks why those symptoms are happening in the first place.
Managing (Masking) symptoms can help you function.
But if you want to actually feel better long-term, you have to look at what’s driving those symptoms underneath the surface.
Your body isn’t working against you—it’s sending you a message.
And when you start supporting the systems underneath—especially the liver—you often see changes that go far beyond one specific issue.
If you’ve been told everything is “normal,” but you don’t feel normal…this is usually where a different approach makes all the difference.
If you’re ready to stop managing symptoms and start understanding what’s driving them, this is exactly the work we do inside my practice.
